FEED THE WORLD I

En 1984, los músicos y estrellas del rock, Bob Geldof y Midge Ure crearon la organización Band Aid para tratar de aliviar la hambruna que aquejaba entonces a Etiopía y Sudán, dos de los países más pobres del mundo.

Geldof y Ure se conmovieron tanto con un documental que transmitió la BBC en Londres, que decidieron grabar un disco para promoverlo en la época de Navidad de 1984 y así recaudar fondos para enviar ayuda a Africa. El título de la canción era, irónicamente: Do they know it's Christmas? (¿Saben que es Navidad?). El sencillo se estreno en la primera semana de diciembre de ese año. Fue el número uno durante varias y recaudó millones de dólares. Lo vendían hasta en las carnicerías de Londres.

Después de eso, los muchachos se dieron a la tarea de organizar el concierto Live Aid, simultáneamente en Londres, Inglaterra y Filadelfia, Estados Unidos, para recaudar más lana.

Hace una semana, me compré el DVD de ese concierto. Me costó 450 varos.

Y lloré como el nerd que soy: lloré cuando el Estadio de Wembley aplaudía al unísono siguiendo el ritmo que le imponía un Freddie Mercury ya enfermo de SIDA, o cuando Geldof casi llora por hacerle los coros a Paul McCartney, o cuando Mercury saltaba de felicidad al lado de un Bono que se parecía más bien mucho al Buki.

Pero lloré más cuando Geldof le grita a un Wembley repleto: "¡Sing it to the world: Feed the world, feed the world!"

Lloré porque parece que nadie los escuchó.
